Roglic clinches fourth Vuelta a Espana victory
Primoz Roglic claimed his fourth Vuelta a Espana title on Sunday, equaling the record for the most wins in the prestigious event, just months after a race-ending crash at the Tour de France. Roglic secured his fifth Grand Tour victory by finishing second in the final time-trial in Madrid, won by Stefan Kung.
“It’s crazy – already four, I just want to enjoy it,” said Roglic, celebrating the win with his family. He crossed the finish line 2 minutes and 36 seconds ahead of runner-up Ben O’Connor of Australia, with Spain’s Enric Mas completing the podium.
An emotional Roglic reflected on the grueling race and sacrifices made: “There’s a lot of sacrificing, not only by me but also my family, everyone around me… I really appreciate all the support from the people around me.”
Roglic, riding for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, reclaimed the red leader’s jersey after a determined performance, including a crucial victory on stage 19. His triumph marked Slovenia’s sweep of the 2024 Grand Tours, with Tadej Pogacar winning the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.
O’Connor, overjoyed with his first Grand Tour podium, said, “I wasn’t expecting this… This calls for a pretty big celebration!”
