Girmay celebrates Tour de France sprint triumph with new contract extension

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay has extended his contract with Intermarche-Wanty until 2028, just hours after winning the Tour de France’s green sprinters’ points jersey, the team announced on Monday.

Girmay made history on Sunday by becoming the first African to claim the green jersey, the Tour’s second most prestigious prize after the yellow jersey, following three stage wins in this year’s race.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Belgian team in 2021, also boasts a stage win at the Giro d’Italia and a victory in the one-day Gent-Wevelgem.

“Intermarche-Wanty is like a family to me, the perfect team to achieve my goals,” Girmay said in a team statement on social media. “In all circumstances, the team supported and trusted me, even during the most difficult times. Extending the adventure for two more years is an obvious choice.”
