Martinez’s brace leads Argentina to 2-0 victory over Peru

MIAMI: In a decisive Copa America clash, Lautaro Martinez scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory for Argentina’s second-string side against Peru on Saturday. This win ensured Argentina finished top of Group A and eliminated Peru from the tournament.

Making his first start in the competition, Martinez continued his scoring streak by netting in the 47th and 86th minutes, marking his third consecutive match with a goal. The Inter Milan striker’s first goal came after a well-executed team move, where he coolly chipped the ball over Peru’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. He repeated the feat in the 86th minute, taking advantage of sloppy defending to chip Gallese once more.

“I’m happy because I was able to score in the three group-stage games and help the team, which is what counts,” Martinez told TyC Sports. Reflecting on criticism from Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign in 2022, he added, “I’m fine, as I said when the match with Chile ended. I had a great season at my club and felt good. It was important for me to prepare well for the Copa America, and I’m showing it. Let’s keep working.”
