Argentina advances to Copa America final with 2-0 victory over Canada

NEW JERSEY: Defending champions Argentina secured their place in the Copa America final after defeating Canada 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final in New Jersey. Goals from Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi propelled Argentina to victory, setting up a final showdown against either Uruguay or Colombia in Florida on Sunday.

This final represents a crucial opportunity for several senior squad members, including Messi, Angel Di Maria, and Nicolas Otamendi, to potentially secure their last piece of silverware with the national team.

“Let’s enjoy what we are experiencing as a national team, as a group. It is not easy to be in a final again, to compete again to be champions,” Messi told TyC Sports. “I’m living it as I have been living everything lately: enjoying it very much and being aware, as it happens to Fideo (Di Maria) and Ota (Otamendi), that these are the last battles.”

Despite their eventual victory, Argentina faced significant challenges from Canada in the opening 20 minutes. Jacob Shaffelburg twice came close to scoring, but his efforts went wide.

Argentina’s triumph brings them closer to claiming their 16th Copa America title. They have now reached the final six times in the past eight editions of the tournament, showcasing their consistent excellence on the continental stage.(Reuters)
