Glasgow seen as alternative option to host 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is struggling to find a host for the 2026 edition after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to financial concerns.
Singapore and Malaysia have declined the CGF’s offer to cover costs, leaving Glasgow, the 2014 host city, as a potential fallback option.
Scotland’s Commonwealth Games body has proposed a “cost-effective” plan that utilizes existing venues and avoids significant public investment. This would necessitate a smaller Games with 10-13 sports compared to the 20 held in Birmingham in 2022.
The CGF prioritizes holding the Games in 2026 and is open to further discussions with Scotland if no other viable option emerges in the coming weeks.
Victoria’s withdrawal and the lack of a confirmed replacement raise questions about the future of the Commonwealth Games, particularly with five of the past six editions taking place in Britain or Australia.
