Australia unlikely to bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games

SYDNEY: Australia is highly unlikely to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with officials citing the proximity to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics as a key challenge.

Craig Phillips, chief executive of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, told the Australian Associated Press that hosting another major sporting event so close to the Olympics would be difficult in terms of government and commercial support.

“Realistically for us, ’30 is not on our radar,” Phillips said. “We think ’30 is just a bit too close when you look at what is required from commercial partners, what is required from various levels of government. It becomes a little bit challenging with an Olympics and Paralympics coming.”

The Commonwealth Games Federation is currently seeking expressions of interest for the centenary edition of the Games in 2030, while Glasgow is set to host a scaled-down version in 2026.(Reuters)
