Qatar’s Younousse, Tijan march on at Hamburg World Championships

Hamburg, Germany: Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan again overcame a slow start to beat Czech Republic’s Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner 2-1 (18-21, 21-13, 18-16) in a Pool D match at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Hamburg on Saturday.

The top Qatari duo’s second straight victory, after their tough opener against Italians Adrian Carambula and Enrico Rossi which they prevailed 19-21, 21-14, 18-16, helped them progress to the knock out round.

Meanwhile, 2017 world champion Evandro Goncalves and new partner Bruno Oscar Schmidt defeated Cole Durant and Damien Schumann of Australia 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 18-16) in a 61-minute Pool I meeting. 

Bruno captured the 2015 world title in the Netherlands with Alison Cerutti before topping the Rio 2016 Olympic podium.

In another match, Andre Loyola, Goncalves’ team-mate in 2017 Worlds, and new mate George Wanderley posted a 2-1 (21-19, 13-21, 16-14) win over 32nd-seeded Robin Seidl/Philipp Waller of Austria in a 55-minute Pool H contest.
