Azriyn Ayub and Wee Kiong reach Malaysia Open last-16

KUALA LUMPUR: Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong delivered an electrifying performance to secure their spot in the last-16 of the men’s doubles at the Malaysia Open. The Malaysian duo defeated China’s Xie Hao Nan and Zeng Wei Han in a hard-fought battle, prevailing 21-15, 12-21, 21-18 at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Since pairing up in June 2023, Azriyn and Wee Kiong have shown steady improvement, achieving a semi-final finish at the Macau Open and Indonesia Masters earlier this year. Ranked 32nd in the world, the pair displayed composure and teamwork to overcome their Chinese opponents.

Their next challenge is a daunting one, as they face India’s world No. 7 duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The Indian pair, fresh off a victory over Taiwan’s Ming Che Lu and Tang Kai-Wei (21-10, 16-21, 21-5), will test the Malaysians’ resilience and skill.

Azriyn and Wee Kiong are part of a strong Malaysian contingent, with six other pairs advancing to the second round, boosting hopes for a successful campaign on home soil.(NST)
