Warholm breaks 300m hurdles mark in front of home crowd
Karsten Warholm stormed to a new world-best time in the 300m hurdles at the Diamond League meet in Oslo on Thursday, clocking 32.67 seconds.
The Norwegian, competing in front of a full house at Bislett Stadium, powered down the home straight to better his own mark of 33.05 seconds set in Xiamen.
He celebrated wildly, tearing off his singlet and pounding his chest after seeing the time on the screen.
The 300m hurdles, recently granted official status, does not yet have a ratified world record.
Warholm, the reigning world champion and 400m hurdles record holder, held off USA’s Rai Benjamin and Brazil’s Alison dos Santos, completing a showdown of the sport’s elite.
Benjamin took second in 33.22 seconds, with Dos Santos third in 33.38.
All three athletes hold the fastest times in 400m hurdles history and have shared Olympic podiums at the past two Games.
