Thompson lays down challenge with 100m win over Lyles

SILESIA, Poland: Kishane Thompson sent a powerful message ahead of next month’s World Athletics Championships by defeating Olympic champion Noah Lyles in a thrilling 100m clash at the Silesia Diamond League on Saturday.
The Jamaican got off to a lightning-fast start and maintained his lead to cross the line in 9.87 seconds. Lyles, known for his late surges, produced his season’s best of 9.90 but had to settle for second. Kenny Bednarek rounded out the podium in third.
It was the first meeting between Thompson and Lyles since their dramatic Olympic final in Paris last year, where Lyles edged out the Jamaican by just five thousandths of a second.
While no world records fell in Silesia, the sun-drenched crowd witnessed top-tier performances. Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon narrowly missed the women’s 3,000m world record, and Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson marked her 800m return with an impressive win.
With Tokyo looming in September, athletes are clearly stepping up their preparations—none more so than Thompson, who now stands as a serious contender for the world title.
