Teen sensation Lutkenhaus to make history at World Championships

OREGON: At just 16 years old, Cooper Lutkenhaus is set to become the youngest American ever to compete at the World Track and Field Championships, scheduled for next month in Tokyo.

The high school junior from Northwest High in Justin, Texas, stunned the athletics world with a sensational performance at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Finishing second in the 800-meter final behind Donovan Brazier, Lutkenhaus clocked an astonishing 1:42.27 — a time that shattered the U18 world record by 1.1 seconds.

Not only did his run eclipse the mark set by Kenya’s Timothy Kitum at the 2012 Olympics, but it also ranks as the fourth-fastest ever by an American and 18th-fastest globally. Remarkably, his time would have stood as the U.S. record less than a year ago.

Lutkenhaus surpasses Mary Cain’s record as the youngest American to appear at the Worlds — Cain was 17 in 2013 — and becomes the youngest U.S. male ever to compete at the event, ahead of Erriyon Knighton, who was 18.
