Qatar’s Ogunode suffers shock defeat

Doha: Asian record holder and reigning champion Femi Seun Ogunode was shocked by Iran's Hassan Taftian as Qatar endured a day of setbacks at the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship in Bhubaneswar, India, on Friday.

Ogunode, the overwhelming favourite in the blue-riband event, finished in 10.26, well behind his Asian mark of 9.91 and had to settle for silver. Taftian clocked 10.25 while Chinese Taipei's Yang Chun-Han took bronze with a timing of 10.31.

Earlier, Jamal Hairane, a favourite in 1500M, also had to settle for silver after finishing behind hosts India's Ajay Kumar Saroj.

India, with six gold, three silver and six bronze, lead the medals tally after the second day of the championship.

Nirmala Sheoran in women's 400M, Muhammad Anas in the 400 men's event, and PU Chitra in men's women's 1500M were India's gold medal winners on the second day.

China are second with four gold three silver and as many bronze medals.

Qatar, last edition's runners-up, are ninth in the table, with three silver medals.
