Nageeye triumphs in New York City Marathon with thrilling finish

NEW YORK: Dutch marathoner Abdi Nageeye emerged victorious in a gripping finish at the New York City Marathon, clocking in at 2:07:39 after an intense showdown over the final mile. In the women’s race, Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui led her nation to a podium sweep, winning in 2:24:35.

The 2022 champion, Evans Chebet of Kenya, appeared on the verge of another victory until the final 400 meters, when Nageeye surged ahead. Chebet, an accomplished runner with two Boston Marathon titles, finished second at 2:07:45, narrowly edging out fellow Kenyan Albert Korir, who completed the race in 2:08:00.

Reflecting on his triumph, Nageeye expressed a sense of disbelief, saying, “I was just thinking I’m dreaming.” This victory held special significance after a frustrating experience at the Paris Olympics, where an unfortunate collision with another runner forced him to drop out.

Chebet, confident and commanding throughout much of the race, made an aggressive move at the Queensboro Bridge around mile 16 to shake up the tightly packed lead group. Despite this bold strategy, he ultimately couldn’t withstand Nageeye’s late charge, settling for second in a thrilling race that highlighted the fierce competition at the highest level of marathon running.(Reuters)
