Ethiopia’s Edris thrills with 5000m gold at Doha Worlds

Doha, Qatar: Muktar Edris of Ethiopia made a thrilling late charge to defend his 5000m title in sensational fashion in the World Athletics Championships at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha on Monday.

Edris, the 2017 champion, was trailing in fourth place as the leading pack approached the final 200 metres and that was when the 25-year-old decided to hit the accelerator.

Compatriots Selemon Barega, Telahun Haile Bekele and Canadian Mohammed Ahmed tried to keep pace, but Edris was too hot to handle, winning it 12:58.85.

Barega clocked 12:59.70 to win silver while Ahmed denied Ethiopia a complete sweep, winning the bronze in 13:01.11.

Bekele was fourth.

European champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen had tried with his all his might but only managed a fifth-place finish, even with dive into the finishing line.

Meanwhile, in 3000m steeplechase for women, Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya won gold in  8:57.84, which is a new championship record.

Emma Coburn of the US took silver in 9:02.35 while Germany’s Gesa Felicitas Krause took the bronze in 9:03.30.

In women's high jump, two-time defending Mariya Lasitskene of Russia, competing under the banner Authorised Neutral Athlete, cleared 2.04 to beat Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh on countback and win her third world title.

 Vashti Cunningham of the US took bronze with a 2m effort.

In men's discus throw, Daniel Stahl of Sweden won with a best mark of  67.59m. Jamaica's Federick Dacres took silver with a 66.94 throw, while Germany's Lukas Weisshaidinger claimed the bronze (66.82).
