Qatar drawn with Iran, Jordan and Chinese Taipei at 2026 Asian Games

DOHA: Qatar have been drawn alongside Iran, Jordan and Chinese Taipei in Group B of the men’s basketball tournament at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The Games are scheduled to take place from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, with 12 teams competing in the men’s basketball tournament across three groups.

Group A comprises hosts Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, while China, the Philippines, Bahrain and Kazakhstan make up Group C.

Qatar will face Iran in their opening Group B match before taking on Jordan and Chinese Taipei in the preliminary round.

The knockout stage will begin with the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and the medal matches.

Qatar’s basketball team has a strong record in Asian competition, highlighted by its first qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2006 when Japan hosted the tournament.

The achievement marked a significant milestone for Qatari basketball and demonstrated the team’s ability to compete at the highest international level.

At the continental level, Qatar won bronze medals at the FIBA Asia Cup in 2003 and 2005. The team also claimed the Asian Challenge Cup title in 2004.

Qatar have also enjoyed success in regional competitions, including the Gulf Championship and West Asia Championship, where they have collected several titles over the years.

The Asian Games campaign will provide another opportunity for Qatar to test themselves against some of the continent’s leading basketball nations as they seek to build on their regional and international experience.
