2026 FIFA World Cup

Historic shootout win sends Egypt into World Cup round of 16

Dallas: Egypt held their nerve to defeat Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout, securing the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory.

The Pharaohs struck first through Emam Ashour, who headed home to give Egypt the advantage. Australia fought back after an unfortunate own goal from Mohamed Hany levelled the contest, forcing the Round of 32 clash into extra time.

In a bold tactical move, Australia introduced veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan just before the penalty shootout. However, Ryan was unable to stop any of Egypt’s spot-kicks as the African side converted all four of their penalties to seal a memorable victory.

Egypt will now face either debutants Cape Verde or reigning world champions Argentina in the quarterfinals in Atlanta on July 7.
