Argentina overcome Switzerland in extra time to set up England semifinal

KANSAS: Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 after extra time to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals, where they will face England.
Alexis Mac Allister gave the defending champions an early lead in the 10th minute by heading home a Lionel Messi corner. Switzerland responded strongly after the break, with Dan Ndoye levelling the score midway through the second half.
The Swiss were reduced to 10 men following Breel Embolo’s red card but showed great resilience to force the match into extra time. Argentina finally broke through in the 112th minute when Julian Alvarez produced a superb finish, before Lautaro Martinez added a third deep into stoppage time to seal a hard-fought victory.
Despite another tense knockout battle, Argentina’s quality in attack proved decisive as they booked a semifinal showdown with England.
